The Fascinating History of Carthage
Founded in the 9th century BC by the Phoenician princess Dido (Elissa), Carthage became the greatest maritime power of the western Mediterranean. After three Punic Wars against Rome (264-146 BC), the city was razed. The Romans rebuilt it to make it the capital of Roman Africa, one of the largest cities in the Empire.
Archaeological Sites to Visit
1. Antonine Baths

The largest Roman baths in Africa, built under Emperor Antoninus Pius in the 2nd century. Although partially destroyed, the impressive remains give an idea of the original building’s grandeur. Don’t miss:
- The monumental columns of the frigidarium
- The basement with the heating system
- The sea view from the site
2. National Museum of Carthage
Located on Byrsa Hill, this museum presents an exceptional collection of Punic and Roman objects:
- Sculpted Phoenician sarcophagi
- Stelae from the tophet (sanctuary)
- Roman mosaics
- Ancient statues and jewelry

3. Byrsa Hill
Historic heart of Carthage, Byrsa Hill offers:
- Remains of the Punic quarter (2nd century BC)

4. The Tophet (Sanctuary of Tanit)
Punic place of worship dedicated to the deities Tanit and Baal Hammon. Thousands of funerary stelae were discovered here. Moving and mysterious site.
5. The Punic Ports
Carthage had two revolutionary artificial ports:
- Rectangular commercial port
- Circular military port (cothon) that could shelter 220 ships
Now peaceful lagoons, they help imagine Carthaginian naval power.
6. The Roman Amphitheater
Built in the 1st century, it could accommodate 30,000 spectators. This is where Saints Perpetua and Felicity were martyred in 203. Only foundations and some tiers remain.
