2026 Guide — Tunisia

Landing at 2 a.m. with two suitcases and three sleeping kids — then haggling over the taxi fare on the way out — is still what most travellers go through when they arrive in Tunisia. The country has three internationally active tourist airports: Tunis-Carthage (TUN), Enfidha-Hammamet (NBE) and Djerba-Zarzis (DJE). Together they handled close to 12 million passengers in 2024 (source: Tunisian Civil Aviation Authority). This guide explains how each airport works, what a transfer actually costs, and why a pre-booked VIP service saves real time when you rent a villa with The Landlord.

Three airports, one unified transfer service

Tunisia has seven civilian airports, but tourist traffic is concentrated on three hubs. Understanding their natural catchment areas saves nasty surprises on distance and price.

Airport IATA code 2024 traffic Natural service area Distance to Tunis Distance to Hammamet Distance to Sousse
Tunis-Carthage TUN 7.25 M pax Capital, North suburbs, North Cap Bon 7-8 km 65 km 158 km
Enfidha-Hammamet NBE ~2.5 M pax Sahel coast, Hammamet, Sousse, Monastir 87 km 40 km 28 km
Djerba-Zarzis DJE ~1.3 M pax Djerba island, Zarzis, Southeast ~510 km ~470 km ~340 km

Key takeaway: a traveller renting in Hammamet who lands at Tunis-Carthage will drive over 65 km on the GP1 highway. Conversely, landing in Enfidha for a La Marsa stay means 1h15 to 1h30 on the A1 motorway. The choice of airport matters as much as the choice of accommodation.

Tunis-Carthage Airport (TUN): the main gateway

Tunis-Carthage alone handles 75% of Tunisia’s airport passenger traffic. In 2024, the airport welcomed 7,249,701 passengers, up 8.8% year-on-year, across 58,690 aircraft movements (source: OACA / Kapitalis, January 2025). It is where almost all Air France, Tunisair, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines flights and most European carriers serving Tunisia land.

Areas reached in under 30 minutes from Tunis-Carthage:

  • Berges du Lac 1 and Lac 2 (5-7 km)
  • Tunis Medina and city centre (7-8 km)
  • Carthage, Sidi Bou Saïd, La Marsa (10-15 km)
  • Gammarth, La Soukra, Ariana (15-22 km)
  • Jardins de Carthage and El Aouina (8-10 km)

Official airport surcharge: a 4.5-dinar supplement is automatically added to the meter fare for any taxi leaving Tunis-Carthage (2024-2025 Ministry of Transport regulation). Base meter: 900 millimes at pickup, then 46 millimes per 79-metre segment. Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., a 50% night surcharge applies on the whole fare.

Classic pitfall: yellow taxis waiting on the arrivals floor often quote inflated flat rates (50 to 80 dinars to reach La Marsa, vs. 15-25 dinars on the meter). The local trick is to walk up to the departures level (1st floor) and flag down a taxi that has just dropped off — it will accept the meter without debate.

Enfidha-Hammamet Airport (NBE): the Sahel gateway

Opened in 2009, Enfidha-Hammamet is the low-cost reference hub for Tunisia’s east coast. TUI, Transavia, easyJet, Nouvelair and Volotea operate the bulk of their charter flights and seasonal routes here. Its geography makes it the natural airport for four strategic destinations:

  • Hammamet (centre + Yasmine): 40-55 km north, 35 to 45 minutes via the A1.
  • Sousse: 28 km south on the GP1, around 25 minutes off-season.
  • Monastir: 60 km southeast, 60 to 75 minutes depending on summer traffic.
  • Mahdia: 100 km south, 1h15 to 1h30.

2026 indicative taxi fares from Enfidha (sources: official meter rate + eTaxi / Welcome Pickups 2026):

Destination Distance Metered taxi Private fixed-rate Duration
Sousse centre 28 km 45-60 TND 70-90 TND 25-30 min
Hammamet centre 40 km 55-75 TND 90-110 TND 30-40 min
Yasmine Hammamet 55 km 65-85 TND 100-130 TND 40-50 min
Monastir 60 km 70-95 TND 110-140 TND 60-75 min
Tunis (Lac/Marsa) 87-100 km 130-180 TND 180-230 TND 1h10 to 1h30

Not every individual taxi at Enfidha has a working meter. For long trips (to Tunis or Mahdia), it is wise to negotiate a flat rate upfront or to book a private transfer ahead of time.

Djerba-Zarzis Airport (DJE): the southern island gateway

Djerba-Zarzis is the only active international tourist airport in southern Tunisia. Located at the western tip of the island, it serves not just Djerba but also Zarzis, Médenine, Tataouine and the Greater South (gateway to Ksar Ghilane). Djerba’s 2023 UNESCO World Heritage listing has boosted traffic: Djerba’s share of national passenger volumes rose back above 14% in 2024.

Distances from the airport (DJE):

  • Houmt Souk (island capital): 9-13 km, 15-20 minutes
  • Midoun and Sidi Mahrez resort area: 20-25 km, 25-30 minutes
  • Aghir and the southeast tip: 35-40 km, 40-45 minutes
  • Zarzis (mainland): 70 km via the Roman causeway El Kantara, 1h15

2026 indicative taxi fares from DJE:

Destination Distance Metered taxi Private fixed-rate Duration
Houmt Souk 13 km 15-25 TND 35-50 TND 15-20 min
Midoun / Sidi Mahrez 20-25 km 25-40 TND 50-70 TND 25-30 min
Aghir 35 km 40-60 TND 70-90 TND 40-45 min
Zarzis 70 km 80-110 TND 130-160 TND 1h15

At night (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.), the 50% surcharge applies everywhere. On Djerba, shared yellow taxis often pool rides (three or four passengers heading to the same resort area): economical for backpackers, best avoided with kids or multiple suitcases.

Why a VIP transfer rather than a walk-up taxi?

For a business traveller or a family renting a premium villa, the price gap between a metered taxi and a private transfer (€15 to €30) buys four things no airport-rank taxi delivers:

  1. A named meet-and-greet at arrivals. The driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, tracking the flight in real time. If the flight is delayed, no extra waiting fee.
  2. The vehicle is chosen in advance. 3-seat saloon, 6-7 seat minivan, 8-seat air-conditioned van: capacity is guaranteed, not negotiated on arrival. For a 4-bedroom villa booked by two families, this matters.
  3. Fixed all-inclusive price. No meter argument, no luggage surcharge, no surprise night supplement. The fare is confirmed in writing before arrival.
  4. Child seats and flexibility. Baby/booster seats on request. Quick stop at a convenience store for evening groceries. Drop-off at multiple addresses for groups splitting up.

According to Welcome Pickups (2024-2025), nearly 80% of French- and English-speaking tourists who rent a villa in Tunisia now prefer a pre-booked private transfer over a walk-up taxi — a clear shift since 2019, largely driven by negative TripAdvisor and Google Reviews experiences.

How it works at TLL: booking, meet-and-greet, payment

When a guest books a TLL property, the airport transfer is offered as a checkout option but can also be added at any point via the TLL concierge. The five-step process:

  1. Request: email to contact@thelandlord.tn or WhatsApp +216 58 59 59 00, with flight number, landing time, airport, number of passengers + luggage, drop-off address.
  2. Quote: within 2 to 4 hours, a fixed all-inclusive price confirmed in writing (TND or EUR).
  3. Confirmation: driver name, plate number and vehicle model sent 24 hours in advance.
  4. Meet-and-greet: the driver tracks the flight live on FlightAware, adjusts arrival time, waits in the public area with a name board. Fresh water bottle provided in summer.
  5. Drop-off: the driver carries luggage to the property, hands over keys (coordinated with the local welcome team) and confirms the next step (groceries, private chef, return transfer). Payment in TND/EUR/card depending on preference.

For return transfers, an automatic reminder is sent 24 hours before to confirm the pickup time. Recommended buffer: 3 hours before departure for TUN and DJE, 2h30 for NBE (smoother motorway, less congested check-in).

Real concierge cases

Three anonymised cases that illustrate the value of a pre-booked transfer:

  • Family from Paris, August 2025: Tunisair flight delayed 4 hours, landing at 2:30 a.m. The TLL driver tracked the flight and waited with two child seats already fitted. The win: no taxi rank at 3 a.m. with two small kids, direct drop-off at the Gammarth villa, keys handed over at the door by the welcome team.
  • Business traveller from London, March 2026: British Airways flight landed early at TUN, no taxi available at the curb. The TLL driver was reached 20 minutes before the planned slot, met the guest in the public arrivals area, dropped him off at Lac 2 in 18 minutes with an English-language property briefing en route.
  • Group of 7 friends, July 2025, NBE → Yasmine Hammamet: an 8-seat van had been pre-booked. On arrival, bulky luggage (golf bags + surfboards) required a second vehicle dispatched as backup at a fixed surcharge — no negotiation, transparent invoice.

FAQ — Airport transfers in Tunisia

1. What is the difference between yellow taxi, red taxi and private transfer?
The yellow urban taxi runs on a regulated meter (900 millimes pickup + 46 millimes per 79 m). The red taxi (intercity, long-distance) uses negotiated flat rates. A pre-booked private transfer is a chauffeured service: chosen vehicle, fixed all-inclusive price, identified driver, named meet-and-greet. For an airport run, the private transfer remains 20-40% more expensive than an honest metered taxi, but removes the arrival-curb price lottery.

2. Can I pay in euros?
Yes for most private transfer companies (TLL accepts EUR, TND, bank transfer, card). Official yellow taxis only accept Tunisian dinars — bring TND cash before pickup (ATMs are available in arrivals at all three airports).

3. How far in advance should I book?
Minimum 24 hours for a standard transfer. 48 to 72 hours for 7-8 seat vans or long-distance transfers (TUN ↔ Djerba by road, or Enfidha ↔ Tabarka). In peak July-August season, one week ahead is safer.

4. Does the driver wait if my flight is late?
Yes at TLL and most reputable companies: the flight is tracked live via the flight number provided at booking. No waiting fee for confirmed airline delays. Beyond 60 minutes for non-flight reasons (customs, lost luggage), a €10 / 30-min surcharge may apply.

5. What buffer should I leave for the return transfer to the airport?
Allow 3 hours before departure for Tunis-Carthage (security can clog up in summer) and Djerba-Zarzis. 2h30 is enough for Enfidha, generally quieter at departure. Add 30 minutes for long-distance return runs (Hammamet → TUN, Yasmine → NBE).

6. How do I book with The Landlord?
Three channels: (a) email contact@thelandlord.tn, (b) WhatsApp +216 58 59 59 00, (c) request at check-in via the TLL team if you only want a return transfer. The TLL concierge also covers private chef, market shopping, private excursions and chauffeur car rental — useful to bundle the inbound transfer with a full day’s excursion.

After arrival: the concierge keeps going

The airport transfer is the gateway to a TLL stay, not a standalone service. Once the traveller is dropped off, the TLL team takes over: pre-stocked groceries delivered to the villa before arrival, private chef for the first dinner, licensed guide for a Carthage or Medina tour, private excursions to Dougga, Tabarka or the southern ksour. Travellers with safety questions can check the Tunisia safety guide.

To book an airport transfer online or a villa with pool on the coast, an apartment in La Marsa or a riad on Djerba, contact the TLL concierge: contact@thelandlord.tn · +216 58 59 59 00. Property owners interested in our rental management will find the details on the owners page. The Landlord manages over 120 active properties across Tunisia and France, with a trilingual team (FR/EN/AR) based in La Marsa.
